I always used to joke that I needed a vacation from my vacation. The last thing I want to do after having what’s hopefully a pleasant trip is coming home to chaos and stress. So, I started thinking about ways I could make coming home easier.
Here are 5 things you can do before you leave so you can enjoy your vacation and make coming home easier and stress-free.
1. Clean House
One of the things we always do before we leave for vacation is set aside time to clean our house. We tidy up, clean out our fridge, take out the trash, do laundry (i.e. washing our towels and sheets). It’s always nice to come home to a clean house and your own bed with fresh clean sheets. The last thing I want to do is come home from vacation to a messy/dirty house. That would be stressful.
2. Pause mail delivery
Don’t let your mail pile up while you’re away in your mailbox. Instead, pause mail delivery until the day after you return once you’ve had a chance to get settled back in so you’re not overwhelmed by the mountain of mail.
3. Schedule a buffer day
Give yourself some time to ease back into your normal routine. We try our best to give ourselves a full 24 hours before we have to return to work. After a long flight/drive/timezone difference, it’s nice to come home and relax a bit more, unpack, and mentally prepare for the week ahead.
4. Plan the week following your vacation
Write out your plan for the week returning from vacation. This way you don’t have to worry about remembering what needs to get done when you get back.
5. Have a Food Plan for when you return
Plan ahead on what you’re going to be eating the first few days when you return. Use a grocery delivery service like Instacart to prepare your grocery list and then schedule it to arrive for when you return.
